Established in 1986 by the Software Engineering Institute, The Capability Maturity Model describes practices and processes around application development, and has become a useful framework for improving software development processes and application quality. The CMM helps organizations improve along an evolutionary path, growing from an ad hoc, chaotic environment toward mature, disciplined processes.

The CMM defines five stages of organizational maturity with regards to software development. Predictability, effectiveness, and control of an organizations software process improve as the organization move up these five levels.

Recently, an enhancement to the CMM model was created – Capability Maturity Model Integration (or CMMI) – which was designed to align development efforts more closely with business requirements.
